Paddle 7. The Hand
March to April 28, 2024.
I took a piece of spruce 2x10 and made a paddle.
It was a nice piece with no knots and straight grain.
I found it by digging 5rough the pile at Home Depot.
The YouTube video below shows most of the process which involved:
Taking a picture of my hand.
Enlarging it in MS-Word and splitting it onto two Landscape pages.
Cutting out the printed hands and taping them back together.
You will note that I typed some words at the point where it would be cut. The existence of these words made it easier to line things up as they acted as registration marks.
Placing the printed hand on the 2x10 and tracing it out.
Using a jigsaw to cut out the paddle.
Using various tools to shape the paddle including:
Oscillating sander, draw knife, power hand planer, rotary tool, chisels and gouges.
Once it was sanded to 150 grit I applied 3 coats of Minwax Spar Urethane.
I can’t wait to give it a try.
